This group focuses on understanding how diseases develop and how to design strategies to chemically intervene the pathological processes by natural and/or synthetic organic compounds. Current areas of research involve synthesizing small organic molecules as inhibitors of viral proteases, cancerous proteins, and other therapeutic targets. Additionally, the group is interested in understanding the development of drug resistance in human cancers, especially the resistance against 5-fluorouracil, as developed by Y33H mutation in human thymidylate synthase. To accomplish these endeavors, the group exploits techniques of synthetic organic chemistry, chromatographic sciences, computational modeling, cell cultures, and molecular biology.
