Farhana Shahzad is a Teaching Fellow in the Writing and Communication Stream at the Mushtaq Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences (MGSHSS). She holds an MSc in Applied Linguistics for Language Teaching from the University of Oxford and an MPhil in English Language Teaching from Kinnaird College for Women University. Her research interests span sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, Critical Discourse Analysis, World Englishes, and English as a Lingua Franca. Her MSc dissertation at the University of Oxford examined the representation of ethnic and religious minorities in Pakistani newspapers through Critical Discourse Analysis. Her subsequent research has explored linguistic diversity, accentedness, comprehensibility, and students' perceptions of World Englishes. She has published research in peer-reviewed academic journals and contributed articles to national newspapers on language, identity, gender representation, and the hidden curriculum. Her teaching and curriculum development focus on integrating critical thinking, academic writing, and inclusive pedagogical practices. She designed Genesis of World Englishes, a thematic Writing and Communication course that encourages students to critically engage with linguistic diversity and question conventional perceptions of English language varieties. She has also co-designed and is currently teaching the writing component of the interdisciplinary Data Literacy course, which emphasizes critical data interpretation, evidence-based argumentation, and the communication of complex ideas with clarity, nuance, and an awareness of the limitations of evidence. Her broader academic interests include exploring the relationship between language, discourse, identity, and power, with a particular emphasis on corpus-based approaches to discourse analysis and the role of language in shaping social perceptions.
